Why This Blog

Why This Blog? There are many reasons, and the most important is – I want Counties and Cities to THRIVE, not just “get by.” Over the past decade, I have seen County/City Administration move from one Position to another Position carrying with them the same old ideas, same limited vision, same drive to just get by until the next opportunity comes along, hopefully with a bigger paycheck.

Another reason why is, this blog helps me stay focused on new ideas, new visions for what Counties/Cities can strive to accomplish, and develop ways to put them into action. My hope is that City/County leaders, no matter their position, can use some of what I write about and see useful nuggets of information.

My hope is this blog helps other develop on their path. In today’s fast-changing, unpredictable world we need new leaders with new visions, new creative ideas. I believe every County/City is, at its heart, alive and vital for community members to grow, be safe, and live in a community where they are welcomed. Leaders who can thrive, move forward, and have a heart and passion for the communities they serve and the courage to address issues facing their communities, will thrive. Leaders who can look to the future; who can face challenges as opportunities in disguise; who can focus on possibilities and not dwell in problems who are not trying to tweak 19th and 20th century ideas into a 21st century world. Those who refuse the rigid structures, or outdated management playbooks, or the seven deadly words, “we never did it that way before.” Leaders who embrace change and innovation. The 21st century demands an adaptive approach, with a forward-thinking mindset, and one who can thrive in a continuously evolving environment built on reinvention.

My over-arching hope is County/City staff and elected officials looking to kickstart a rejuvenate economic development and jump-start and revitalize their communities will read, post comment and start dialog on haw to move forward. I do not claim to have all the answers, so other voices are always welcomed.

I want to close with this, I know there are differences between county and city structure, but I believe a Leader is a Leader, and skills are skill, and we all need to learn to lead. If you think, you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.
