People Are Looking for Leaders Who Are…

As we move along in the 21st-century, I’m amazed so many leaders still focus on an Autocratic approach to leadership. In my conversations with those Leaders, I heard the reason they need to be an Autocratic Leader is because this gernation does not work ans hard as other generations.

Here are just some complaints I hear about how they feel about this generation:

  • They feel this generation is distant and disconnected.
  • They feel this generation has no idea what it takes to be successful in business.
  • They feel this generation has no idea what it means to be successful.
  • They feel, this generation does not understand the role of a “the Boss.”
  • They feel this generation does not understand who makes the decisions
  • They feel, this generation does not understand the meaning of hard work and dedication.
  • They feel this generation adds meaningless input to their ideas.
  • They feel this generation just does not want to work, and they want the easy life.

Before I go on, let me share this little tidbit of info on this generation, that might put an end to some of those issues; as of the date of this post, there are 1,790,000 millionaires and 21 Billionaires under the age of 30. While about 650,000 under 30 earn over one million dollars a year in the USA, so I think this generation understands hard work and success. With that, let me share with you the traits Leaders moving forward need in the 21st Century, not just for this generation, but for all generations:

People are looking for Leaders who are Real/Authentic: In general, people what to know their leaders are real, transparent, and willing to admit mistakes. They don’t live behind a mask of caring, they truly care. In every survey I have read, and I have read a ton of them, being real/authenticity are at the top traits people look for in Leaders.

People are looking for Leaders who are Adaptable/Versatile: Leaders who honestly embrace change and not just use “adoptability” as a buzzword in meeting. Those who are open to new possibilities, new ideas, and are open to input from others.  People are looking for Leaders who can evolve their approach and become fluid and accept different ideas.

People are looking for Leaders who are Inclusive/Acceptable: Leaders with encourage open dialog and communication. They respect new and differ ideas, and they do not shutdown ideas they may disagree with. They understand and embrace the importance of diverse perspectives in decision-making.

People are looking for Leaders who show honest Compassion/Humility: Showing humility and compassion are not weaknesses, they are superpowers many Leaders ignore; keep in mind, humility is the verb, and people what to see action. Those who can honestly demonstrate humility and share wise perspectives in an open and inviting way are using their superpower in a crucial and meaningful way.

People are looking for Leaders to be Fearlessness/Courageous: To build loyalty and trust, a Leaders needs to show courage and fearlessness in making the final decision; keep in mind, courage does not mean control, and fearlessness does not mean jumping into the fire. Courage is acting on and show strength in decisions, in the face of fear. Courage shows a moral conviction to do what is right.

We need to be prepared for the unprecedented challenges we will face as we move along in the 21st century. We can do this best by developing a culture of inclusion, innovation and resilience. Saying you are authentic, adoptable, inclusive, humble, and courageous has no meaning, it takes you living those qualities. Ensuring people feel valued, welcomed, and not overly pressured will make leading you team to success.
